Science is a way of life . It enables an individual t<\/span>o think rationally and base decis<\/span>ions on logic and<\/span>
reasoning . I<\/span>t becomes utmost important specially in the primary years of schooling when a child<\/span>
begins to develop an indep<\/span>endent though<\/span>t process.<\/span><\/span>
Being a science teacher<\/span> I<\/span> always feel that<\/span> the learning experience has to be structured in such a way<\/span>
that the nature of science becomes an inherent part of the child\u2019s thought process.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
But what is<\/span> scientific attitude and temper<\/span>?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
An individual with scientific temper<\/span> doesn\u2019t believe in things until tried and tested.<\/span> T<\/span>he spirit of<\/span>
enquiry<\/span> and observation becomes the<\/span> guiding<\/span> approach<\/span> .<\/span> And<\/span> a<\/span>t the same time<\/span> one<\/span> is ready to<\/span>
change<\/span> decisions<\/span> ,<\/span> when evidences points in another d<\/span>irection .<\/span><\/span>
We often<\/span> think that<\/span> the<\/span> one<\/span>s who study science automatically<\/span> develop<\/span> scientific temper.<\/span> But<\/span> that<\/span>
is not true<\/span> , to develop a scientific way of thought process a reflective and experiential curriculum<\/span>
right from the primary years is important<\/span>. A learner centric ,progressive , enquiry based ,reflective<\/span>
curriculum enable<\/span>s<\/span> a child to think rationall<\/span>y and base de<\/span>ci<\/span>si<\/span>ons and actions on evidences.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
How<\/span> can i develop scientific temper in my child?<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
Child\u2019s scientific temper is directly related to the environment<\/span> he\/she is in and the company he\/she<\/span>
keeps. So the curriculum at school and parenting style has lot to<\/span> offer towards the development of<\/span>
scientific temper in a chil<\/span>d. A collaborative approach w<\/span>here the teachers and parents work together<\/span>
is essential .<\/span><\/span>
In this blog I\u2019ve zeroed on<\/span> few<\/span> strategies which both teachers and parents can employ to<\/span>
development such a temper in a child .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

of seeking answers to events around is a very significant behaviour towards scientific<\/span>
temper.<\/span> In other words,<\/span> curiosity<\/span> can be a great motivator that makes the brain sincerely<\/span>
want to learn.<\/span> When we praise learners<\/span> by describ<\/span>ing how their questions,<\/span>
explorations, and investigations are<\/span> contributing to their own or classroom<\/span>
le<\/span>arning, we<\/span> let them know that they are<\/span> valued for their motivation, regardless<\/span>
of the grade they achieve. The same applies at home too. At times due to o<\/span> ur<\/span>
busy schedule , we often tend to leave many<\/span> curious questions unans<\/span>wered which<\/span>
needs to be avoided<\/span> as<\/span> parents.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
well versed and<\/span> an avid reader<\/span> . With increasing influen<\/span>ce of technology<\/span> , parents are<\/span>
worried about the diminishing interest in reading<\/span> .<\/span>So as to inculcate reading<\/span>,<\/span> various<\/span> \u0935\u0947\u095b <\/span>can be employed at home and clas<\/span>sroom<\/span> . By c<\/span>reating a reading space<\/span> or fixing exclusive <\/span><\/span>reading days at home and even classroom can be a goo<\/span>d way . We often tend to make <\/span><\/span>children read according to our choices but rather than forcing them ,<\/span> we need to make them <\/span><\/span>have their independent choices to read . But what is important to note that<\/span> the material<\/span>
they choose ,<\/span> should be age appropriate.<\/span> The best way to encourage reading is by setting<\/span>
our own example. When the child observes their teachers and parents reading , they<\/span>
instantly develop an urge to read.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
riddles , brain teasers , logic ,reasoning and analysis infuses excitement and stimulates<\/span>
learners to think critically .<\/span> Chess , board games ,crosswords ,puzzles are some very good<\/span>
options easily available .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
expose them to the latest scientific developments around.<\/span> Discovery science,<\/span> Scishow<\/span>
science, Emily\u2019s wonder lab , Brainchild are few good options .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
scientific developments happening globally . National<\/span> Geographic kids, Bill Nye\u2019s Great big<\/span>
world of Science , Edible Science can be looked upon.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Providing the right environment and a collaborative efforts of teachers and<\/span> parent during<\/span>
primary years will be a deciding factor in raising independent , confident learners with a<\/span>
scientific tempe<\/span><\/span>r.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
